Simply A Cruise (Part 4)

The 2010 Thacher Island Lighthouse Cruise continued back around Cape Ann.

As we approached Straitsmouth Island, a sailboat provides perspective.

Simply A Cruise (Part 2)

The lighthouse cruise continued up the coast of Gloucester towards Rockport and the twin lights on Thacher Island.

The history of the twin lights can be read on New England Lighthouses.

A sailboat dances in the water in front of Thacher Island.

The next lighthouse on the tour is Straitsmouth Island Lighthouse. Since the island is closed to the public, the best view of it can only be seen from th water.

Simply Trekking

A few more shots from the walk along the Atlantic Path in Rockport.

What a day to sit and gaze out at distant shores.

Sheets of slate gabbro.

In the words of Paul Morrison (GoodMorningGloucester's fact checker extraodinaire), gabbro is a type of igneous rock which filled that crack in the granite from below and made a dike. This occurred in the Ordovician period about 450 million years ago when all this rock was also miles underground.

You can more about these volcanic rocks on this Oregon State University site.

Simply Tending Traps

A jaunt along the Atlantic Path in Rockport this morning provided stunning vistas and beautiful, picture perfect weather.

During the walk, a couple of lobster boats tended their traps.

Simply The Point

Sometimes, one needs to escape from the beaches and boating around Cape Ann. This may be considered by some to be heresy, especially on one of the few hot summer days we have had this year.

An early morning walk through Halibut Point State Park felt right. Early mornings are often the most quiet times up here and the wooded paths set the tone.

Here are two views of the Babson Farm Quarry with distant views of the ocean behind.

The visitors center and fire control tower rise above the quarry.
