Simply Tulips

A few pictures and poems about tulips to brighten your day while we await the sunny days of May.

A Tulip Garden
by Amy Lowell

Guarded within the old red wall's embrace,
Marshalled like soldiers in gay company,
The tulips stand arrayed. Here infantry
Wheels out into the sunlight. What bold grace
Sets off their tunics, white with crimson lace!
Here are platoons of gold-frocked cavalry,
With scarlet sabres tossing in the eye
Of purple batteries, every gun in place.
Forward they come, with flaunting colours spread,
With torches burning, stepping out in time
To some quick, unheard march. Our ears are dead,
We cannot catch the tune. In pantomime
Parades that army. With our utmost powers
We hear the wind stream through a bed of flowers.

TULIPS
by Jennifer Scott

Touch the landscape with
Unified rows of pink, white and red. When the
Lips open, inviting dreamy afternoons and child’s play. Through
Ice and dreary weather, snuggled deep in the earth, waiting to
Perfume the night, first flowers of
Spring, of regeneration when color permeates all that is gray.

Thy fingers make early flowers
by e.e. cummings

Thy fingers make early flowers
of all things.
thy hair mostly the hours love:
a smoothness which
sings,saying
(though love be a day)
do not fear,we will go amaying.
thy whitest feet crisply are straying.
Always
thy moist eyes are at kisses playing,
whose strangeness much
says;singing
(though love be a day)
for which girl art thou flowers bringing?
To be thy lips is a sweet thing
and small.
Death, thee i call rich beyond wishing
if this thou catch,
else missing.
(though love be a day
and life be nothing,it shall not stop kissing).

Simply Reflecting on Rock Neck

The first Sunday of May brought the type of weather which had many shouting "Just rain, already and get it over with!" There was too much of a threat of rain for most of the day for any real outdoor plans, but the day also provided that "I should be doing something outside" angst for many.

Here are two reflections of boats on Rocky Neck waiting for a better day.

Simply Wing On Wing

For as long as there are boaters, there will always be the discussion of sailboats versus powerboats. Although I currently drive a powerboat, I'd rather be sailing.

One of my sailing mentors often stated it this way.

A powerboat will get you there in a hurry. With a sailboat, you are already there.

When sailing, you cannot make the wind blow or change its direction. You can, however, just as in life, adjust your sails to help get you where you are going.

With a powerboat, you often control the boat. With a sailboat, you become part of the boat.
